Good morning! PPP would like to take this opportunity to introduce our four new leaders as we begin the application process for our next party in February! Our leaders are: Maxine Markfield, Karl Sjogren, Lauren Stoner, and Vanessa Veltre.
Maxine is a candidate for the MS in Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon’s Heinz College with a background in Economics from Haverford College. A former Coro Fellow in Public Affairs and a resident of the Pittsburgh region for a total of twelve years, Maxine’s time as a Coro Fellow exposed her to the many dimensions that Pittsburgh has to offer. She loves all of the distinct neighborhoods, the restaurant scene, and the networks of people, particularly the vibrant young professional community. Maxine has found that Pittsburgh young professionals are creative, entrepreneurial, and active, and that they are doing some great things for the city of Pittsburgh! Through PPP, Maxine wants to bring more awareness to individuals and organizations who have innovative solutions for tackling tough social challenges and connect them with the resources to succeed. In addition, she wants to support a community of people who are looking to get more engaged with society. How? Let’s Party!!
Karl, armed with an MS in Public Policy and Management and a BS in Decision Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, both from Carnegie Mellon University, has lived in Pittsburgh for seven years. He loves Pittsburgh because it’s accessible to all of the major east coast cities, has an equal amount of cultural events, architectural history and city amenities as those same major east coast cities…except it’s CHEAP! Through PPP, Karl hopes to connect a broader range of young professionals to one another and to the larger Pittsburgh service community, and to further develop and support the burgeoning creative and educated professional scene in Pittsburgh.
Lauren is finishing up her last year in a dual Masters program at the University of Pittsburgh in Social Work and Public and International Affairs. She has lived in Pittsburgh for nearly eight years, and completed her undergraduate degree at Pitt in Politics and Philosophy, English, and Urban Studies. Lauren loves Pittsburgh for oh-so-many reasons, especially because Pittsburgh has for so long been seen as a gritty, underdog, rust-belt city, but has truly begun to fight that image with transformations in the past decade. She loves the diversity of neighborhoods, the vast green spaces, the unique housing stock, and the unending Yinzer pride (Go Stillers!) Through PPP, Lauren hopes to continue to engage and connect young professionals in the city to nonprofit organizations through awareness and service, and bring recognition to blossoming community-led and community-based organizations who are dedicated to social change and social justice.
Vanessa has lived in Pittsburgh for 29 years and earned an MSW in Community Organizing and Social Administration from the University of Pittsburgh and a BS in Music Therapy from Slippery Rock. Vanessa loves Pittsburgh because of it’s low-cost of living, unique neighborhoods, and kind people. Through her role at PGH Party for a Purpose, Vanessa hopes to shine some well-deserved light on organizations in the city which are doing so many wonderful things, and hopes to provide a fun and purposeful way for people to connect in the spirit of service.
We look forward to meeting all of you at our first party the weekend of February 25th, 2011!
